Victoria Winter Bucket List: Outdoor Edition

Victoria Winter Bucket List: Outdoor Edition

There’s something kind of magical about winter in Victoria. The way the mist rolls over the hills. The steam rising from a hot chocolate clasped in cold hands. And while it’s tempting to stay tucked up inside, winter is actually one of the most underrated seasons to get outside.

So we’ve pulled together a little cold-weather bucket list to help you embrace the brisk air, the slower pace, and the beauty of the outdoors this season.

Here’s our Outdoors Edition of Victoria’s winter bucket list:

✨ Wander with the glow worms at Melba Gully

Located in the Otways, this magical little rainforest lights up after dark thanks to glow worms dotting the damp mossy walls. Rug up, bring a torch (red light mode if you can), and take the short loop walk through the forest for a quiet, sparkling show.

⛺ Camp under the stars at Lake Eildon

Yes, winter camping is a thing - and it’s dreamy. Think misty mornings, early nights by the fire, and clear, starry skies. Lake Eildon has a few campgrounds perfect for pitching a tent (or rolling up in a camper) and watching the Milky Way put on a show. Just bring extra socks.

❄️ Snowshoe through the Alpine National Park

Swap the ski lift for something quieter. Snowshoeing through Victoria’s alpine region is peaceful, scenic, and surprisingly easy to get into. Try Mt Stirling or Falls Creek for beginner-friendly routes.

🛁 Soak under the stars at Peninsula Hot Springs

This one’s cheating a little - it’s outdoors and toasty warm. Book a twilight soak in one of the hillside pools, and let the hot water thaw your fingers while the cold air nips your nose. Bring a mate, or just zone out and stargaze solo.

🛷 Tobogganing at Mount Buller

A winter bucket list isn’t complete without a bit of snow play. Mount Buller’s toboggan parks are a hit with big kids and small ones alike. No skill required - just a sense of fun and a dry change of clothes for the ride home.

🦘 Wildlife spotting at Wilsons Prom

Winter is the time for quiet walks and curious wildlife at the Prom. Less crowds, more wombats. Walk to Whisky Bay, check out the Tidal River trails, and keep an eye out for emus, wallabies, and the occasional echidna waddling past.

🌄 Sunrise hike at The Pinnacle, Grampians

It’s early. It’s cold. But trust us - seeing the sun spill over the Grampians from the top of The Pinnacle is so worth it. Bring layers and some tea in a thermos.

🚴 Ride the Warburton Rail Trail

Cruise through charming towns, rolling farmland, and eucalyptus forests on this easy bike trail. It’s 40km end to end, but you can pick a smaller section if you’re after a half-day spin with a café stop (or two) along the way.

🌊 Coastal walk at Inverloch

Winter at the beach? Yes please. Inverloch’s wild coastal walks come alive in the colder months - think dramatic skies, crashing waves, and salty air in your lungs. The Screw Creek trail is a gentle option with great views over Anderson Inlet.

☕ Hot chocolate crawl in Melbourne’s laneways

Because after all that adventuring, you’ve earned a little indulgence. Hit up your favourite Melbourne laneways (Centre Place, Degraves Street, Hardware Lane) and treat yourself to a hot chocolate or three. Extra points for toasted marshmallows.

Ready to rug up and get out there?

Whether it’s a quick stroll, a gentle soak, or just soaking up a cosy café moment, every little adventure counts. Throw on your layers, grab your favourite drink, and enjoy winter your way ❄️
