Best Dog Friendly Long Walks in Victoria

Struggling to find decent hikes that are dog-friendly? Unfortunately a lot of trails don't allow you to bring your four-legged bestie along so it's always important to check the ParksVic website before you adventure. But luckily for you, we’ve done the hard work and compiled this list of hikes around Victoria that both you and your furry friend can enjoy.

George Bass Coastal Walk

Heading southeast from Melbourne, the George Bass Coastal walk is a great day walk with spectacular scenery. It’s great for enjoying views of beautiful farmland and the Bass Coast, all with your furry friend. The walk begins at Punchbowl car park, San Remo and ends in Kilcunda. Alternatively, you can start in Kilcunda.

Distance: 14km round trip

Duration: 4 hours return approx

You Yangs

For the whole family, the You Yangs is just an hour’s drive from Melbourne where dogs are permitted throughout the park. There’s a variety of trails to explore - the most popular being the Flinders Peak walk, which provides superb views from the top.

Distance: 3.2km (with plenty of steps to ascend)

Duration: 1 hour approx

Best Dog Hikes in Victoria

Yarra Bend Park Walk

As the largest natural bushland park in Melbourne, enjoy walking along the winding Yarra River with plenty of room to explore. Dogs are permitted in most of the park, and there’s also a bunch of off leash areas too. Follow the river and make it as short or as long as you wish!

Distance: From 2km - 15km, it's up to you

Mathias Walking Track

Nestled in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges is one of the best dog-friendly bushwalks near Melbourne through deep forest. You can start your walk from the old Olinda Golf Course where your four-legged friend can enjoy a good off-leash run around before entering onto the trail.

Distance: 4km out and back

Duration: 1 hour approx

Mount Martha Community Forest

This walk is doggie paradise - kilometres of leash free fun and a small creek for your pooches to play. Soak up the peaceful atmosphere as you amble through the forest with multiple paths to follow. Entry is directly opposite the Balcombe Grammar School.

Distance: 2.5km +

Distance: Half an hour +

Red Hill Rail Trail

An easy and straightforward out and back walk passing farmland, pine trees and eucalypt forests. Start the trail at Merricks and head all the way down to the town centre of Red Hill for the full walk. Just be mindful of other trail users, including mountain bikers and horse riders, who often use this shared trail.

Distance: 6.5km (one way)

Duration: 2.5 hours approx
